I have been incredibly lucky lately in that I have made some amazing Mom friends. Granted, once our kids are grown up enough to have a say in who they spend time with, I don't know how often I'll be able to see these Mom friends, but right now... they're amazing.
It helps that our children were all born within 4 months of each other. And of course, given their ages, that's how we met. We get together 2-3 times a week (and we sometimes have to travel, though we all live within 30-35 minutes of each other). Our kids say goodnight to the other kids at bedtime and ask for them when they wake up. (At least, my kid does).
And they're awesome women.
Recently, one of the mom's was having a really hard time dealing with the exhaustion that comes with a toddler. Especially a toddler who started waking multiple times at night again, and refusing to go back to sleep. She was reaching a breaking point. This amazing group of women came together to email her, call her, FB message her, and basically do whatever we could to offer help and support. She wasn't real quick to take us up on it, but I know that she really appreciated the time and effort everyone took.
Yesterday, we took the trip to her house for a play date. She's one of the farthest moms, with a 35 minute drive for me, and a 45 minute drive for another friend, but since she's always traveling to see us, of course we didn't mind traveling to see her.
And oh my! did the kids have fun! This mom has a bouncy house... yes, a bouncy house that she set up right in her living room! My son, who thinks jumping is the best thing since ... well... walking, had so much fun in that thing! She has a play set in her playroom (yes, inside) that my son also LOVED! Basically, we're all wondering why she hasn't had play dates there before! Heck, for those toys, I'd drive all the time. ;)
So, this summer has been extremely rainy. Not incredibly more so than normal, but a lot more than the previous two years. It was raining on the way up, and still raining when we left, but not badly. However, right as we're leaving to come home for nap time, there was a tornado warning alert that came over the radio for my area. Not hers, but mine. Not that I could hang out, my son really needed a nap after being up two hours early that morning.
So, I'm driving home and as I get to about 15 minutes away from my house, the rain really picks up. You know, to where you can only see about 10 feet in front of you, and you hope and pray that everyone's smart enough to turn on their headlights, because otherwise you won't see them at all. My son picks that very moment, when the rain is slamming into the car and I can't see very far in front of me, to start crying and fussing.
Cause, you know, that is the BEST time to make Mama's already tense shoulders that much more tense. I don't know if you've ever noticed this or not, but your own child's cries seem like the end of the world sometimes.
Today, we went to lunch with some of the mom friends, and managed to drive into another storm on the way home. Guess what he did? Yep, started fussing again just as we hit the major downpour.
Sigh, this kid is determined to make his Mama a driving-in-the-rain scaredy-cat.
